Madonna and Child by Duccio di Buoninsegna

Madonna is another way to reference the Virgin Mary, and she is often depicted holding a young baby jesus. This painting of them is not the first, nor is it the last due to a group named the Cult of the Virgin Mary. The most famous was done by Rapheal a couple centuries after this one. Duccio’s is the first major painting we see from the 14th century as it becomes public in the year 1300, just barely passing the line for the first.

It also has the benefit of being considered the Origin of Western Painting by authors like Keith Christianson. Whether you believe or not, it is a keystone to the artwork to come during the Renaissance.

You can currently view this beautiful painting in the Metropoliatian Mesuem of Art.
